More Details Available on I-40 Crash

"The operator of the vehicle being driven the wrong way on I-40 this morning has been identified as 92-year-old Emery Gideon Tucker, Sr. of High Point.

Tucker was driving eastbound on westbound I-40 after entering the interstate from an off-ramp near the I-85/I-40 exchange. Callers to 911 reported seeing a blue sedan traveling in the wrong direction in at approximately 10:30 am

At approximately 10:32, three vehicles travelling westbound on the inside lane of traffic stopped to avoid striking Trucker’s 2001 Buick that was travelling towards them. The fourth vehicle in the lane was unable to stop to avoid a collision, and struck the third vehicle. The third vehicle was pushed into the second vehicle, which, in turn, struck the first vehicle that stopped to avoid being struck head-on. Tucker’s vehicle was not struck.

The driver of the fourth vehicle received minor lacerations to his face and was treated on scene by EMS. The driver of the third vehicle received injuries to her left leg. She was transported by EMS to a local hospital. Her toddler, who had no visible signs of injury and was properly secured in a child safety seat, was also transported for a medical evaluation.

The two occupants of the second vehicle complained of possible back injuries and were also transported by EMS to a hospital.

The driver of the first vehicle to stop did not report any injury.


No charges have been filed against Tucker yet. The investigation is on-going."
