U.S. Masters Chess Championship to be Held August 27-30 in Greensboro



WHAT: Tournament play for 2015 Greensboro Chess Festival begins tomorrow! The U.S. Masters Chess Championships begin Thursday, August 27th. One of the United States’ top chess tournaments, the U.S. Masters features the U.S. Open Champion Alexander Shabalov, as well as 28 players with the title of Grand Master or International Master, the two highest titles in chess, competing for more than $17,000 in prize money. Players from 14 different nations will compete in the event, being held at the Embassy Suites Hotel located at 204 Centreport Dr. in Greensboro. Attendance for spectators, which will run through August 31st, is free.

Play begins with the first round on Thursday, from 7:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. Tournament play continues over the weekend with rounds at noon – 5:00 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and also from 7:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. Friday – Sunday. The final round will be held during the final session Sunday evening.

INFO: The 2015 Greensboro Chess Festival is being held August 22-31, 2015 at locations throughout Greensboro. Sponsored by The YMCA of Greensboro and VF Corporation, with additional sponsorships from the Greensboro Chess Club, Bank of North Carolina, The City of Greensboro, Cemela Corporation, the Greensboro Symphony and Stearns Financial, the Greensboro Chess Festival features a series of events designed to educate and expose adults and children to the game of chess. Chess has been shown to improve reading and math skills and expand strategic thinking important to other athletic sports and life in general. The festival culminates August 27-31 with the U.S. Masters Chess Championship, the North Carolina Open on August 28th, and the North Carolina Scholastic Open on August 29th.
